GitHub's "Key Is Too Short" Error
For projects created before 15th October 2026 that use the manual repo connection type, you may see following error when adding a SSH deploy key into GitHub:
Key is too short. GitHub recommends using ssh-keygen to generate a RSA key of at least 3072 bits.
This is because on the 14th October 2026, GitHub changed their security requirements surrounding RSA SSH keys. In response, Servd's deploy keys have been switched from RSA to ED25519, which is a more secure and concise signing algorithm. Projects created after the 15th October 2025 have a pre-generated ED25519 deploy key by default.
How To Fix #
To resolve the above error, please perform the following steps:
-
Visit your project's Build & Deploy page.
-
Under the Deploy Key field in the Source section, click the "Regenerate" button.
Note: doing so will stop the existing RSA deploy key from working.
-
Once the deploy key has been regenerated, click the "Copy" button.
-
Paste the deploy key contents into the project's GitHub repository settings page.
-
The project should now be able to access the GitHub repository.
